By ministerial order, fishing during the reproductive period is prohibited – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-04-11 10:16:33

Due to the natural reproduction of spring-summer breeding fish, the Minister of Agriculture and Food, in agreement with the Minister of Environment and Water, issued an order for prohibition for catching fish and other aquatic organisms in the Black Sea, the Danube River and inland water bodies.

Order No. RD09-406/11.04.2024 prohibits fishing of gobies (Alosa immaculata) from 01/05/2024 to 31/05/2024 inclusive, in the Bulgarian section of the Danube River and of gobies (Gobiidae) from 15/04/2024 to 15/05/2024 inclusive, in the waters of the Black sea.

The ban on turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) fishing is from 15.04.2024 to 15.06.2024 inclusive. In relation to turbot, in this period, apart from any fishing activity and transshipment, retention on board, landing and first sale, in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2024/259 of 10 January 2024 determining the fishing opportunities for 2024, it is prohibited of certain fish stocks and groups of fish stocks applicable in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

For all other spring-summer breeding fish, fishing bans depend on the altitude of the water bodies according to the periods defined in Appendix No. 1 of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act (see below)

The order also extends the ban on catching whitefish (Sander lucioperca), pike (Esox lucius) and bream (Aspius aspius) in the Bulgarian section of the Danube River until 31.05.2024, including for the purpose of protecting the spring-summer population breeding carp, catfish and other heat-loving fish in the river and reducing their bycatch.

It is important for anglers that recreational fishing is permitted during the prohibition period in designated water bodies. A list of water bodies free for fishing in 2024 by region can be found in the order here: https://www.mzh.government.bg/bg/sektori/ribarstvo/?edit_off
