KOMPAS.com – The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has opened its voice over the decision to choose Lee Chong Wei to enter the honorary list of the Hall of Fame which had invited criticism from Taufik Hidayat.
Malaysian badminton legend, Lee Chong Wei, is one of the names chosen by BWF to enter the 2023 Hall of Fame list.
Apart from Lee Chong Wei, another figure who also entered the BWF Hall of Fame this year is the former Chinese men’s singles player, Lin Dan.
Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan were sworn in in an official ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia, on Friday (26/5/2023).

Touched by Taufik Hidayat
BWF’s decision to choose Lee Chong Wei into the Badminton Hall of Fame was then touched by the Indonesian men’s singles legend, Taufik Hidayat.
In a podcast on YouTube which was released on May 14, 2023, Taufik questioned BWF’s criteria for selecting Lee Chong Wei into the Hall of Fame.
Taufik assessed that Lin Dan deserved to be on the honorary list because of his achievements.
However, for Lee Chong Wei, Taufik claims he was chosen because the BWF office is in Kuala Lumpur.

At the same time, Taufik also stressed that he did not consider himself better than Lee Chong Wei.
However, he again emphasized that Lin Dan deserved to be included in the honorary list of the BWF Hall of Fame.

Lee Chong Wei was confused
Regarding Taufik Hidayat’s comments regarding BWF’s decision to enter his name into the Hall of Fame list, Lee Chong Wei admitted that he was confused.
The winner of three Olympic silver medals said Taufik should have contacted BWF.
“I have nothing to do with it. Taufik should have contacted BWF for clarification,” Lee said as quoted by the New Straits Times, Friday (2/6/2023).
“I didn’t put pressure on BWF to enter my name into Hall fo Fame. I didn’t realize it until BWF sent me a letter,” Lee added.

BWF clarification
BWF finally responded to the polemic between Lee Chong Wei and Taufik Hidayat regarding the Hall of Fame by providing clarification.
The BWF clarification was uploaded on their official Instagram account on Sunday (4/6/2023).
In its statement, BWF explained that Lee Chong Wei’s entry into the Hall of Fame list had gone through a recommendation and selection process.
The following is BWF’s official statement regarding the selection of Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan to the Hall of Fame list.
“Upon the recommendation of the BWF Awards Commission, the BWF Council endorsed the nominations of Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei for the BWF Hall of Fame as per the selection criteria described in the BWF Awards Rules.
Both are worthy recipients of the award for their outstanding contributions to badminton over a significant period of time.
BWF recognizes the achievements and contributions of many legends of this sport and looks forward to inducting more champions into the BWF Hall of Fame in the years to come.”
