Buyers Will Have More Protections When Buying Tickets to Live Events in New York – NBC New York (47)

If you like to go to live events you will have more protection when buying your tickets in the state of New York.

This is because Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation targeting unfair and anti-consumer ticketing practices in the live events industry.

The legislation will increase transparency for consumers buying tickets to live events by banning hidden fees. In addition, the bill will expand the penalties for the use of bots resellers and software will prohibit the sale of tickets that are free and will prohibit delivery fees on tickets that are delivered electronically or printed at home.

The measure also expands and updates New York’s “Ticketing Law” by incorporating policy recommendations from a 2020-21 legislative investigation into the state’s live event ticketing industry due to concerns about potentially unfair practices, deceptive and contrary to the consumer that occur in the primary and secondary markets.

Additionally, it will increase civil penalties for the use of ticket purchase software and require ticket sellers and resellers to clearly and conspicuously disclose the full cost of a ticket. Additionally, the bill will ban shipping fees for paper-at-home tickets and ban the sale of tickets that were originally distributed for free.

“Live entertainment has long been a critical sector in our economy, and as consumers and the industry recover from the pandemic, it’s important that we make the ticket buying experience easier and more transparent,” Governor Hochul said. “This bill will expand penalties for malicious ticketing practices that have made live events inaccessible to New Yorkers for too long. Today, we’re taking an important step to ensure all New Yorkers have a fair chance at enjoy the unique arts and cultural experiences our state has to offer.
