PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has a conversation with Wired indicated that he expects the PlayStation 5 to be more widely available in the second half of 2021. How seriously we should take that is still the question, because the Japanese company recently announced that it was only introduced 2022 could meet the demand.
“We are working as hard as we can to improve the situation,” Ryan said in conversation with Wired. “We are seeing production increase during the summer and certainly in the second half of the year and we hope to see a kind of return to normalcy in that period in terms of the balance between supply and demand.”
The comments follow a similar response from Ryan in February, when he suggested the situation would improve by the month in 2021 – especially in the second half of the year. We recently saw some of this in the Netherlands and Belgium, because the last drop took place last week Bol.com. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki recently said that Sony cannot keep up with demand and that stock problems will continue into 2022. “Even if we have many more PS5 consoles next year, our supply could not keep up with demand,” said Totoki. What’s actually going to happen with the stock and offerings is unknown, of course, but it’s probably fair to say that the conflicting reactions don’t paint the most promising picture for PlayStation fans still on the hunt for a PS5.
Totoki has also stated that Sony is exploring various options to address the global chip shortage, such as finding secondary suppliers or possibly providing a renewed PS5, which may be released in 2022.
