But no 37C3 in Hamburg: CCC also cancels this year’s Congress

Even the Chaos Computer Club will not organize a Chaos Communication Congress this year, 37C3 was surprisingly canceled today, Tuesday. The reason is the unpredictable Corona situation at the end of December. The local groups of the association are called upon to organize decentralized and independent events as an alternative. The club itself wants to devote itself to preparations for the Chaos Communications Camp, which will be held in Brandenburg in mid-August 2023. The announcement of the cancellation made no mention of a central alternative taking place virtually, as has been the case over the past two years. .

Although no one knows what the crown situation will be like at the end of December, it is foreseeable that strict hygiene requirements will be needed, says the club. It is also possible that an event of this size will not take place at all. The imaginable conditions “would dominate the whole event and its atmosphere beyond recognition,” says the club. An internal discussion showed that with these perspectives the motivation to organize on a voluntary basis is crumbling. That’s why the advanced plans for 37C3 would be shelved, he said.

The last Chaos Communication Congress before the start of the corona pandemic took place in Leipzig at the end of 2019, followed by the two “remote chaos experiences” rC3 and rc3-2021, in which contributions from all over Germany were streamed central platform. Only ten days ago, however, the CCC for proposals for this year’s congress, which was to take place again in Hamburg. The cancellation follows a few days later. The next few weeks and months will show which replacement there will be. At the CCC, people are looking forward to “talks, workshops, art, music and certainly one or the other surprise” at decentralized events between Christmas and New Year.
