But 127 truck drivers are eager to work in the UK

Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister and one of the great men behind Brexit, tapped The Times newspaper on the fingers. Not just 27, but 127 foreign truck drivers have applied for visas to help Britain out.

That is still very little. There are 300 visas available for tanker drivers and a total of 5000 visas for foreign truck drivers.

And 5000 is way too little. According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the British organization that represents the interests of road hauliers, there is now a shortage of about 100,000 truck drivers.

Logistic problems

As a result, there are significant logistical problems in the UK. Gas stations cannot be supplied enough because there are too few drivers who can drive tank trucks. This leads to long queues at gas stations. The British government has even deployed military personnel to supply the pumping stations.

In addition to gas stations, supermarkets and restaurants are also suffering from the severe shortage of truck drivers.

Brexit

Tens of thousands of drivers returned to Europe after the British left the European Union. The UK government wants fewer foreign workers to come to the UK. This has been successful, but with employee shortages as a result.

According to Johnson, the problem is not so much caused by Brexit, but the shortage of truck drivers is a worldwide problem. He also believes that the shortage is due to the recovery of the economy.

But according to research agency IHS Market, the shortage of drivers and other workers is actually slowing down economic growth. In addition, problems with the supply of parts that play a role worldwide are also hampering economic growth, according to IHS Markit.
