Buses pelted by aggressive passengers: ‘Today was hit again’

According to Peters, a bus was pelted again this afternoon by a passenger because he could not come. “Due to the corona measures, the buses fill up much faster because there are fewer people who can take the bus. Apparently that makes some passengers aggressive,” the chairman of the industry association of public transport companies told RTL News after newspaper Trouw.

Pelted or spitting on the bus

Pelted buses spit on the bus or drive black. According to Peters, it has become increasingly common in recent weeks because it is slowly getting busier again in public transport. Although it is still relatively quiet on the buses, trams, metro and trains.

“For example, the buses are now about 10 percent full compared to ‘normal’. But we do see that the weather is getting busier in public transport. And that aggression is also increasing.”

Not only on buses, but also on subways and trains, public transport employees are confronted with aggression. There are no precise figures yet, but the stories where things go wrong come from all over the country, says Peters.

Excesses

The chairman of OV-NL emphasizes: “Fortunately, it is excesses and it is a small group that misbehaves. It is often the younger passengers. The vast majority of passengers adhere to the rules.”

Peters calls on everyone to behave and adapt to the corona measures.

More clarity

OV-NL also requires clear rules from the government. “So that the companies can take appropriate measures for passengers and staff. Who will soon be allowed on the tram, and who will be allowed to travel on the train? And: Do travelers have to wear masks? We would like clarity quickly.”

Next week there will be an advice from the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) about the usefulness of mouth masks. And about its use in public transport.
