Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes set the record for most strikeouts without a walk in a major league season Thursday by reaching 58.

The 26-year-old Burnes started Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals with 49 strikeouts since the start of the season and retired nine more batters in the first four innings.

Corbin Burnes’ mark ended in the fifth inning when he walked to American Tommy Edman.

The previous best strikeout record at the start of a season belonged to Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Kenley Jansen, who struck out 51 batters in 2017.

Corbin Burnes, who had not pitched since April 26 due to an asymptomatic case of covid-19, outplayed Jansen when he struck out Harrison Bader (Cardinals) in the second inning for his 52nd strikeout of the season.

Burnes later added another six, breaking the best strikeout streak without a walk for any time in a season, which was pegged at 56.

This brand was shared by Curt Schilling, who achieved it in 2002, and Gerrit Cole, whose streak is still active.

Cole will have a chance to break Burnes’ record in his next start for the New York Yankees.
