Burgenland elects a new state parliament

Burgenland is re-electing the 36-member Landtag on Sunday. 250,181 voters are called to cast their vote. There are six lists to choose from. The first polling stations open at 6.45 a.m., the poll closes at 4 p.m. From this point onwards, the first projections will be made. A preliminary result is expected between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Doskozil wants to be clearly at the top again

For the incumbent governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), it is the first choice in this position and a mood test for the only red and blue state government. First place cannot be taken from him. In the last election in 2015, the SPÖ under Hans Niessl received a minus of 6.34 percentage points and 41.92 percent, the lowest level of support since it became the dominant force in the country in 1964. The second strongest force in Burgenland is the ÖVP with currently 29 percent.

The blue governor’s deputy party achieved a top rating of 15.04 percent in the 2015 refugee crisis election. That will probably not be sustainable. The Greens have a moderate 6.43 percent and can hope for gains. The Burgenland list under Manfred Kölly and the NEOS have to tremble for entry into the state parliament, for which at least four percent are required.
