Burgenland Community Celebrates 100 Years of Maintaining Ties with Emigrants

“It is very important to me to support our ‘compatriots’ who have emigrated and to maintain their ties to their homeland,” said Verena Dunst, President of the State Parliament

Since 1956, the Burgenland community has nurtured and promoted the homeland ties of Burgenlanders all over the world. It acts as their interest group abroad. President Eduard Nicka and his team primarily address the Burgenlanders who have emigrated to Europe, America and other overseas countries. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2021, Burgenland also made special reference to the Burgenland countries abroad. The history of the Burgenland emigrants could be viewed in exhibitions in Stadtschlaining, in the State Museum and also in the Emigration Museum in Güssing. The Burgenland community strives to keep these and their descendants in close contact with their homeland. Today, Sunday, July 2nd, 2023, the 61st traditional “picnic” of the Burgenland community took place in the Moschendorf Wine Museum. President of the Landtag Verena Dunst said at the meeting: “It is very important to me to support our ‘compatriots’ who have emigrated and to maintain their ties to their homeland. For Burgenland with its many foreign Burgenland residents and their descendants, it is of very great importance that we maintain connections with them,” said the President of the Landtag.

Personal destinies and stories are also part of Burgenland’s history and identity, which is why it is very important to the President of the Landtag to support the ‘compatriots’ who have emigrated wherever it is necessary and possible. and maintain their ties to their homeland. Around 66,000 people from Burgenland emigrated in the last century. “These have never forgotten their homeland and are still part of Burgenland in their hearts,” explained the President of the Landtag, adding: “This would not have been possible without the work of the ‘Burgenland community’, which has been cultivating and promoting this connection to their homeland for decades and so that the close relationship with Burgenland is maintained.

Verena Dunst took today’s meeting as an opportunity to thank them for their commitment and excellent work, also on behalf of Governor Hans Peter Doskozil. This will take part in the celebrations of “100 years of country team” in America in October. Finally, she referred to the annual meeting of the citizens of Burgenland abroad, which will take place next Tuesday, July 4, 2023, in the Landhaus in Eisenstadt.
