Strong Mbabu initiates Wolfsburg victory – Schalke can no longer win

Bremen – Wolfsburg 0: 1

VfL Wolfsburg remains on course for the Europa League. The Lower Saxony prevailed 1-0 in the 30th round in Bremen and plunged Werder even deeper into the crisis.

The goal of the day in pouring rain in the Weser Stadium was scored by the Dutchman Wout Weghorst, who scored in the 82nd minute with his twelfth goal of the season to 1-0. The Swiss international Kevin Mbabu initiated the goal with a ball capture and a steep pass in depth. The Austrian Xaver Schlager had hit the bar for the guests a minute earlier.

While the Wolfsburg team secured place 6 thanks to the victory, which entitles them to participate in the Europa League, Bremen slipped even deeper into the crisis within five days with the second defeat. Florian Kohfeldt’s team remained at home in the 13th game in a row without a win and is four points before the end three points behind Fortuna Düsseldorf, which takes relegation place 16.

Renato Steffen, who dismounted a suspension, was missing at Wolfsburg, Admir Mehmedi was replaced after a good hour. The Swiss international then sat on the grandstand with a thickly bandaged ankle.

Union – Schalke 1: 1

In the second game on Sunday in the Bundesliga, Union Berlin and Schalke split 1-1. For the guests, it was the first point in the fifth game since the resumption of the season in mid-May.

The draw in the duel between the two weakest teams since the restart was flattering for Schalke, as Union was closer to the winner in the closing stages. Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel saved the point in the 87th minute when he parried Keven Schlotterbeck’s shot from close range following a corner.

Urs Fischer’s team had also been better in the starting phase and deservedly took the lead in the 11th minute through Robert Andrich. Schalke only came into play better after Jonjoe Kenny equalized, who scored with a great long-range shot (28th), after Union previously missed more chances.

Thanks to the point, Schalke, who has been without a win for eleven competitive matches, practically secured relegation. Union maintained its lead of four points on the relegation place.
