The ball rolls again

Germany’s federal and state governments have given their permission to resume the Bundesliga from the second half of May. Chancellor Angela Merkel and the state premiers agreed on Wednesday. The German Football League (DFL), the umbrella organization for the 36 professional clubs in the 1st and 2nd leagues, has received the hoped-for approval for ghost games.

The DFL decided on Wednesday evening to let the ball roll again on May 15th, choosing the earliest possible date for the resumption. The Bundesliga season has been suspended since mid-March, with nine games to be completed. The DFL aims to be able to pull this through by June 30. On Thursday, however, the DFL will still discuss the details with the clubs – there is definitely resistance from this early date from Bremen and Mainz.

She had previously presented a comprehensive hygiene and security concept to minimize the risk of infection among players and coaches. In a first test series, there were ten corona cases in 1,724 tests in the 1st and 2nd leagues.

Previous quarantine is mandatory

Before the start, all clubs must be in a strict quarantine. It is not known exactly when this starts. The federal government’s draft resolution states: “The start of play operations must be preceded by a quarantine measure, possibly in the form of a training camp, as provided for in the tested concept.” The professional footballers are largely strictly isolated at their clubs, but not yet completely in quarantine.

A continuation of the season is extremely important for the league, because many clubs run into financial difficulties due to a lack of income. If the Bundesliga continued, at least the TV millions would be secured.
