Bundesliga – Gladbach runs into the Champions League – Sport

Borussia Mönchengladbach – Hertha BSC 2-1 (1-0); Goals: Hofmann (7th), Embolo (78th), Ibisevic (90th)

He hoped, said Gladbach coach Marco Rose before the game, which was about the Champions League, “that we are just us again”. So he wanted to see again the fast-paced football with which his team had conquered the top of the table in November. In fact, the players who looked a little exhausted recently did this favor; they started off against Hertha BSC. After only six minutes, Breel Embolo won in the penalty area against three Berliners, passed the ball on to Jonas Hofmann, who scored effortlessly. From then on, the Gladbachers scored one goal after the other. After a corner, Embolo finally raised to 2-0. So it didn’t matter that Vedad Ibisevic reduced in added time.

Gladbach’s goal has been achieved. The Rose team has long been out of the table, but the Champions League qualification is like a small championship for the Gladbachers (and for the Gladbachers’ wallet).

Bayer 04 Leverkusen – 1.FSV Mainz 05 1-0 (1-0); Goals: Volland (2.)

Kai Havertz is considered to be the most talented footballer in the league, but on the last matchday the willing Leverkusen offensive player was initially on the bench. However, his teammates showed him that they were doing well without him: In the second minute, Kevin Volland fooled on the right, pulled past on the left and hit the goal hard.

A regular hit no longer fell afterwards. Once, Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was offside, once the young Florian Wirtz kicked his opponent too hard on a Volland goal. Havertz was finally allowed to play along. It was probably his last Bundesliga game for Leverkusen. Since Gladbach won against Berlin at the same time, Bayer missed the Champions League. The likelihood of Havertz leaving the club has now increased.

VfL Wolfsburg – Bayern Munich 0: 4 (0: 2); Torus: Coman (4.). Cuisance (37.), Lewandowski (72.), Müller (78.)

FC Bayern had been unable to take away the championship for eleven days, but the Munich team were motivated in Wolfsburg. Thomas Müller extended his master record in the fourth minute and served Kingsley Coman unerringly, he has fired 21 assists this season. The Bavarians were only four goals away to break their own goal record of 101 goals. As a result, Michael Cuisance scored his first goal for the Munich with a nice shot in the left goal corner. Robert Lewandowski, the best scorer of the season, converted a penalty – his 34th goal of the season. Müller finally made it 4-0. But they just missed the goal record.

This did not bother the Munich team, they lifted the championship trophy for the eighth year in a row. Wolfsburg was annoyed that Dortmund had Hoffenheim (more or less) won and VfL now has to qualify for the Europa League.

Borussia Dortmund – TSG Hoffenheim 0:4 (0:2); Tore: Kramaric (8.), Kramaric (30.), Kramaric (48.), 0:4 Kramaric (Elfmeter, 50.)

The reaction to the farewell gift could not be read from Mario Götze’s face on this 34th matchday. Finally, the rules of dealing with this darn virus forced him to wear a face mask, but it must have been the happiest moment of the afternoon. So Götze stood there with a framed collage and flowers. Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, sports director Michael Zorc, BVB president Reinhard Rauball and license player boss Sebastian Kehl had given him those who applauded his teammates.

The game then focused on another offensive force: Andrej Kramaric in the blue Hoffenheim shirt, who scored a total of four goals. It was a brilliant performance by the Croatian, who scored by long range, twice from the game in the penalty area and a penalty. However, one has to add: After the applause from Götze, the Dortmunders seemed to have already ticked off the season internally. Because they forgot elementary things like defending the strongest attacker. They were always too passive – and Hoffenheim still managed to qualify directly for the Europa League.

After four years, Götze, the 2014 world champion, is leaving BVB for the second time. Unlike when he left FC Bayern in 2013, his future place of work is uncertain; at BVB he was only a reservist. At his request, he also stopped playing on Saturday.

Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 SC Paderborn (2-0); Goals: Rode (9.), Silva (33.), Dost (52.), Dräger (55.), Michel (75.)

The descent of SC Paderborn was already clear two weeks ago, so coach Steffen Baumgart said before his team’s farewell performance, which ultimately resulted in the 22nd defeat of the season: “You should be looking forward to the game.” But he also said: “We are all happy when the season is over.” On the last afternoon of the Bundesliga, his players showed themselves to be somewhat divided. Mohamed Dräger was able to celebrate his first Bundesliga goal, and his teammates also created some other top-class opportunities.

But the more efficient soccer players were to be found on the other side: Sebastian Rode shot the Frankfurt with a fine right-footed shot from the edge of the box, Andre Silva and Bas Dost easily increased. Then at least Dräger and Sven Michel were allowed to meet before the vacation. Born in Rostock, Baumgart is drawn to the Baltic Sea to switch off after the unusually long season – with the motto: “Draw strength and then go full steam ahead to the second division.”

SC Freiburg – FC Schalke 04 4: 0 (2: 0); Tore: Waldschmidt (20.), Schmid (38.), Höler (46.), Waldschmidt (57.)

Schalke President Clemens Tönnies is currently making negative headlines because of an immense corona virus outbreak in his slaughterhouse. But the club from Gelsenkirchen is not at all sporty either. David Wagner’s team had not won in 15 games – the 16th game was also lost. SC striker Luca Waldschmidt scored after 20 minutes, Jonathan Schmid then cheated the ball through a ball of players into the goal, then Lucas Höler Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel also stood before Waldschmidt even increased to 4: 0. In November Schalke would have been almost the league leader, now the club ends the season in twelfth place. Only one win came in the second half of the season. It can go that bad.

FC Augsburg – RB Leipzig 1:2 (0:1); Tore: 0:1 Werner (28.), 1:1 Vargas (71.), 1:2 Werner (80.)

Timo Werner played for RB Leipzig for the last time – and even scored two goals in victory in Augsburg. At the end he even set a Bundesliga record for Jupp Heynckes from the 1970s: with 17 away goals. At FCA, Werner did what distinguished him the most in the four years in Leipzig: start at the right moment at the level of the last opposing defender, pick up the steep pass, pull away from the opponents and finally score the goal. With this nose for the right decisions in the attack, he has also recommended for the English top club Chelsea. Werner has now made a strong 28 goals this season in the Bundesliga – only Robert Lewandowski was better.

In Augsburg he had to get used to other teammates on Saturday. Julian Nagelsmann made five changes before the game. Also because the Champions League qualification for the 2020/21 season was already certain, the coach even gave regular goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi a break and set up Yvon Mvogo for him. Among other things, also new: Amadou Haidara, who put Werner in scene before the 1-0. Werner had saved two small farewell gifts for his club until his substitution in the 82nd minute, in the Champions League final in August he would no longer appear for the Leipzig team.
