Nicholas Day is one of the most important Orthodox holidays. December 6th is dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. He is revered as the deliverer of captives and patron of sailors, travelers, merchants and bankers.

The “king of the table” on this day is the fish and especially the carp. The legend says that once the saint entered the sea, but during a storm his boat was broken. He pulled a carp out of the sea and plugged the hole with it.

Therefore, carp is considered a sacrificial fish on the table on this special day. The carp must be freshly caught and necessarily with scales. During cleaning, the housewife must be careful that the scales do not fall on the ground, because this portends trouble.

To this day, Bulgarians en masse choose the traditional carp for the Christmas dinner.

Survey of “Focus”shows that many people choose other types of fish for the festive table.

What kind of fish will the Bulgarians serve on their table on December 6?

A fish seller revealed to “Focus”what are the most bought fish for the holiday.

“They usually bet more on carp and mackerel, but other fish are also bought – trout, sea bream, everyone has an individual taste”she said.

“We settled on bonito, I like carp, but in my family they prefer bonito, I will comply with them”says another lady.

“I’m going to celebrate Nicholas Day, I bought salmon. I don’t follow the prices because I buy a little and that’s enough for me”a woman we asked revealed her choice to us.

“I chose mackerel for the holiday”shares another of those asked, who also turned out to be a directory.

“Traditionally I chose carp with scales for nobility and prosperity”says a woman excited about the holiday, in whose family the tradition is respected.

“I haven’t bought a fish yet, but I won’t buy a carp, I’ll buy a trout, because I love it the most. When it’s fried, it’s great, that’s how it tastes to me”admits one of the interviewed men.

“Usually I use carp for the feast, but this year it will be bonito, it’s to my taste and to the taste of the family. This year I decided to diversify“, says another.

Regardless of whether you have bet on carp or have chosen another seafood as the main course of the festive table for Nicholas Day, we wish you to spend it with positive emotions in the company of loved ones.
