Brussels’ emergency gas plan collapses, Spain rejects it

“I deeply regret to announce that Spain does not support this proposal,” said Riber. “We believe that the proposal was drawn up without a prior general debate in the European Council. The economic consequences of the plan are very serious. Nobody can claim victims without first discussing everything and those concerned being able to express their opinion,” said Riberová.

According to the plan, in the event of a failure of Russian gas supplies, EU countries would have to reduce gas consumption by 15 percent during the coming winter season. The savings should cover the period from the end of August this year to the end of March 2023. They will be calculated from the average consumption of individual countries in this period over the last five years.

According to the EC, all consumers, from households to offices and companies to power plants, should reduce the use of gas. If a country wants to ask other countries for solidarity, it will first have to prove that it has made the necessary savings. By the end of September, states should update their national energy plans and clearly outline how they want to achieve savings.
