“All options are on the table, but my proposal to Mr Diependaele is: abolish this unjust road tax and let the Fleming decide for himself how much he wants to pay for his car”, says Smet. “Let us work together, the three governments together, for a fairer road tax system.”
Diependaele does not say no, but remains suspicious. “We asked for consultations weeks ago when the plans were leaked,” he says. “Now this consultation is with the knife to the throat.”
“This is a proposal,” said Sven Gatz. “This is neither to take nor to leave.” Gatz says he is willing to talk about rates, but also about the distribution of income. He hopes that a supported common proposal will eventually be found.
