Brussels Airlines Strike Continues: Only Seven out of Ten Flights Expected to Depart – Latest News and Updates

Only seven out of ten Brussels Airlines flights will actually depart on Thursday, the result of the second strike day in a row. Unions and management did not reach an agreement on Wednesday evening about the workload and remuneration.

“We nevertheless put a very substantial proposal on the table,” Brussels Airlines spokesperson Nico Cardone regrets the failed negotiations. The airline also criticizes the strike by the Christian union, which is continuing due to the lack of an agreement. “This damages the reputation and financial situation of the company, and causes major inconvenience to our passengers.”

The social conflict revolves around more pay and better work arrangements to reduce the workload of cabin crew. “The employees want to raise the many problems with the planning system, the excessive workload and the lack of rest,” Jolinde Defieuw of ACV Puls previously explained the reasons for the social conflict to this newspaper. “The work is perceived as extremely hard, with many employees working part-time to keep the workload somewhat bearable. Yet they are also confronted with significant amounts of overtime.”

Something that the management cannot fully agree with, because Brussels Airlines openly called on the unions after the meeting last night to reflect on their position and strategy. “We have gone through an extremely difficult period due to corona, the company is gradually climbing out of the valley again. Sticking to unrealistic demands damages the entire company. We continue to strive for the best possible working environment for all employees, while at the same time remaining competitive.”

On Wednesday, one in five Brussels Airlines flights had also been canceled due to a strike by the Christian union, the smallest union at the airline. The other unions still had a wait-and-see attitude regarding strikes on Wednesday. Olivier Van Camp of BBTK then put the ball in the airline’s court. “If the management does not meet our demands, the coming tourist months could be difficult.” To be continued.
