Brussels: a diving firefighter attacked by the person he was trying to rescue in the canal

A Brussels firefighter diver was assaulted by the person he was trying to rescue on Saturday night, we learned on Sunday. He received several punches. He suffers from an incapacity for work and intends to file a complaint, indicates the spokesman of the fire brigade Walter Derieuw.

The firefighters received a call on Saturday around 10:20 p.m. about the presence of a man in the canal near the Quai des Péniches. There, they spotted the person calling for help. A firefighter diver entered the water to rescue him but received several punches in the face when he came up to the man. “This was clearly not the classic drowning panic reaction”, adds the spokesperson for the firefighters. “Our colleague was even bitten in the hand.”

The perpetrator was eventually overpowered and taken to hospital for treatment. The diver was also injured.
