Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Because of Aston Villa players

Manchester United had a chance to save a point in stoppage time but Fernandes’ shot from the spot went just wide

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unhappy with the way Aston Villa’s players surrounded Bruno Fernandes before the midfielder missed a late penalty.

Villa brought home three points from Old Traffrod in the English Premier League through a late goal from Kortney Hause, Saturday (25/9).

United had a chance to save a point a few minutes later when awarded a penalty as the goalscorer was charged with handball.

What did Solskjaer say?

The execution of the penalty was delayed as players from both clubs surrounded the penalty area and the referee, with the visitors protesting the referee’s decision.

Solskjaer complained that Villa’s players tried to annoy the Portugal star in a post-match interview, saying: “First of all, the way they circled the penalty spot, around Bruno, I don’t like that but I understand it shouldn’t be.

“Bruno is usually very good in those situations but unfortunately it didn’t work out this time. It doesn’t bother Bruno, he is mentally strong and will come back.”

He added: “Today you will definitely bet on Bruno. I don’t like the way they surround the penalty spot. Obviously it worked for them, but I don’t like seeing it. They got what they wanted.”

Asked if Fernandes was the first choice penalty taker, Solskjaer replied: “I took the decision before the game, yes.”

Fernandes’ penalty in the match against Aston Villa was the 23rd time for the Red Devils, and the second time he failed to execute.

The last time the midfielder failed as an executioner was last October when they beat Newcastle 4-1.

What did Aston Villa say?

Villa defender and hero Hause was irritated at awarding an opponent a penalty but claimed he was at a disadvantage after viewing the replay.

“When they pointed to the white dot I was disappointed and upset with myself. I realized I didn’t make myself grow up,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“I tried to put my arm in, so when Bruno scored the penalty I was relieved. That’s justice because I don’t think it was a penalty.”

The Villa manager agreed with his centre-back, saying: “I saw the replay. What a cruel penalty. I wasn’t sure where he had to put his arm when the ball went by so fast.”

“For me, the failure is justice.”
