Brooke Shields’ Near-Fatal Seizure: Excessive Water Intake and Sodium Deficiency Leads to Grand Mal Seizure

Shields, 58, started feeling unwell while waiting for a taxi. “I got to the bottom of the stairs and apparently I started looking funny, and the people I was with said, ‘Are you okay?’ Shortly after she went to the sommelier in a restaurant, her eyes went black and her head hit the wall. The actress started frothing at the mouth, turned “completely blue” and almost swallowed her tongue.

An assistant called Bradley Cooper after he couldn’t get through to Chris Henchy, Shield’s husband. Shields woke up again in the emergency room, while she was on oxygen. Cooper, who co-starred with her in the movie “The Midnight Meat Train,” joined her at the hospital. According to the doctors, the grand mal seizure, also associated with epilepsy, was due to excessive water intake and a sodium deficiency. “I flooded my system and drowned myself. And if you don’t have enough sodium in your blood, urine or body, you can have a seizure,” Shields said.
