Bron. Anti-noise radar on trial, how does it work?

An anti-noise radar is tested from this month of February in Bron. This installation is notably carried out thanks to two companies in the Lyon region and aims to determine the capacity of the system to effectively detect offenders.

Bron deliberated Thursday, February 3 to validate the experiment, for four months, of an anti-noise radar located on the avenue Camille-Rousset. A national trial developed on eight sites in France and which, out of the three partner companies, mobilize two companies from the Lyon region, ACOEM (Limonest) and MicrodB (Écully), designer of the sound radar installed in Bron (and Paris) in the coming days.

“It was logical for us to participate: we have scientific relays in the municipality with Cerema (Centre for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and planning, Editor’s note) and Gustave Eiffel University in the Cité des Mobilités”, explains Marion Carrier, Transport and Roads Assistant. As for avenue Camille-Rousset, it met various criteria of the study (minimal flow, location away from a traffic light or a speed bump slowing down traffic, unobstructed viewing angle) and the analysis from the community. “We mostly have tampered-with two-wheelers that make noise and drive too fast,” explains the municipality.

“The difficulty is to isolate a source of noise”

“A traditional sound level meter cannot tell the difference between two vehicles, explains the director of microdB, Lucille Lamotte. The difficulty is to isolate a source of noise. This is why we use antenna techniques equipped with several networked microphones. The assembly makes it possible to isolate a source of noise in a delimited space. »

The sound recording is coupled with a video recording in order to locate the vehicle concerned and of which it will have been established by the sound level meter that it has exceeded the authorized threshold. “But there is no registration that comes under the CNIL, specifies Lucille Lamotte. For video, we only capture one or two images and for sound, it is only a few milliseconds. »

Enough to identify offenders effectively? This is what the experiment will aim to prove before the State plans to provide for its generalization. No real verbalization during this trial period, but Bron will be informed of the results recorded by the radar.
