Broad support for Initiative for more Tempo 30

A large area of 30 km / h is the desire in many municipalities. However, a special permit is required for a pilot project. State Transport Minister Winfried Hermann speaks out in favor.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) supports a move by several German municipalities to test a large area of Tempo 30 in a pilot project. Hermann said in Stuttgart: “Only a broad alliance of cities can overcome the resistance of the Federal Ministry of Transport with the support of the federal states.” The goal is a human-friendly city in which pedestrians and cyclists can also feel safe. The Verkehrsclub Deutschland welcomed the project.

VCD Landeschef Matthias Lieb said, nationwide Tempo 30 is a necessary measure to advance the traffic turnaround and to be able to achieve the climate targets. Several major German cities, including Freiburg im Breisgau, Ulm, Aachen, Augsburg, Hanover, Leipzig and Münster, are calling for a change in the road traffic regulations in order to test Tempo 30 in a pilot project. The usual speed of 50 km / h should then only be permitted on the few main roads. The initiative is supported by the German Association of Cities in Berlin.

Mannheim also participates in the nationwide initiative. Reduced speeds contribute to a liveable environment, said Mayor Ralf Eisenhauer. Tübingen has also joined the initiative. For the university city, the legal change would probably not be of great relevance, since the majority of the streets are already at 30 km / h, the municipality said.

In Stuttgart there is a corresponding application from the municipal council on the subject. The administration is currently checking this. Basically, Lord Mayor Frank Nopper (CDU) said about Tempo 30: “I do not consider a nationwide Tempo 30 in the entire urban area à la Paris to be the right approach.”

The municipalities taking part in the initiative for the pilot project emphasized that without a new legal requirement they would not be able to decide whether to change the speed requirements flexibly and depending on the location. It is not an initiative against drivers. Rather, it is a project for the residents of the municipalities.

The head of ADAC Württemberg, Dieter Roßkopf, said that in Baden-Württemberg, almost 85 percent of the urban road network is already 30 km / h.
