Britney Spears Settles with Father, Avoids Trials Over Controversial Conservatorship

Britney Spears Settles Confidentially with her Father in Controversial Conservatorship Case

Britney Spears has reached a confidential settlement with her father, Jamie Spears, bringing an end to her highly controversial conservatorship. The settlement allows the pop star to avoid the previously scheduled trials regarding the handling of her finances. Her lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, stated, “Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete. As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court or entangled with legal proceedings in this matter.”

The settlement was also confirmed by Jamie Spears’ lawyer, Alex Weingarten, who expressed Jamie’s relief that the legal issues have been resolved. Weingarten stated, “Jamie is thrilled that this is all behind him. He loves his daughter very much, and everything he has ever done has been to protect and support her.”

Background

Britney Spears had previously labeled her 14-year conservatorship, mostly led by her father, as exploitative and traumatizing. The trials, which were averted by this settlement, were scheduled to address the money used from her estate for conservatorship-related expenses in 2019. Additionally, the second trial was planned to address fee petitions for several lawyers who worked on her father’s behalf.

In January 2022, after the conservatorship was terminated, Spears filed a motion objecting to her father’s latest law firm’s fee petition. The filing included a sworn statement from Sherine Ebadi, a former FBI agent, who had been hired to investigate allegations of conservatorship misconduct. Ebadi’s statement supported Alex Vlasov, a conservatorship whistleblower, who had claimed that a hidden listening device had been placed in Britney’s bedroom by his former security company.

An Insight into Britney’s Struggle

During a powerful statement to a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge in June 2021, Britney Spears expressed her feelings of exploitation and being bullied by her father and the individuals overseeing her conservatorship. Spears stated, “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK, and I’m happy. It’s a lie. I thought, just maybe, if I said that enough, maybe I might become happy because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, ‘Fake it till you make it.’ But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

Spears revealed that she felt pressured to agree to her 2018 “Piece of Me” tour and was threatened with legal action. As she prepared for her second Vegas residency, “Domination,” she was treated like a “slave” and was being unknowingly administered the powerful drug lithium. Spears also shared the various restrictions imposed by the conservatorship, including the inability to remove an IUD, get married, have a baby, and contact old friends.
