The British Parliament definitively validated the Brexit agreement on Wednesday, clearing the way for the historic exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union in nine days. )
The text, which regulates the terms of the divorce, and negotiated by Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Brussels, is yet to be promulgated by Queen Elizabeth II, possibly as early as Thursday, to have the force of law.
The Brexit agreement regulates the terms of the divorce by guaranteeing in particular the rights of the citizens and by solving the puzzle of the Irish border. Above all, it aims to guarantee a smooth break by providing for a transition period running until the end of 2020, during which the United Kingdom and the EU will negotiate their future relationship.
British lawmakers rejected Lords’ changes to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal on Wednesday in the final stages of the text nine days before the UK’s exit from the European Union.
Five text amendments
The House of Commons, where the Conservative leader has a large majority, had given the green light in early January to the bill on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, scheduled for January 31, before transmitting it to the upper house of parliament.
The latter adopted five amendments to the text, inflicting as many setbacks to the government, concerning in particular the rights of European citizens residing in the United Kingdom or unaccompanied refugee children.
These amendments were repudiated by MPs when the bill returned to the House of Commons on Wednesday, which means that the text must once again be examined by the Lords.
