British dance pioneer Andrew Weatherall passed away

The British DJ and producer of electronic music Andrew Weatherall died at the age of 56. He was known as a versatile musician: his productions and DJ sets covered a broad spectrum of electronic music.

Weatherall grew up in the London acid-house scene from the late 1980s. He broke through with the song Loaded, a remix for the band Primal Scream. He was subsequently co-producer of the Primal Scream album Screamadelica. That album was at the same time a more accessible excursion in his usually experimental oeuvre as a producer.

Tender giant

The DJ died today from a blood clot at his heart. “The world has lost a true pioneer, a genius, one of the best producers, DJs and remixers ever”, writes Dutch DJ Joost van Bellen on his Facebook page. “And above all: a great tender giant. What a loss.” Techno greatness Dave Clarke praises Weatherall’s knowledge of and love for “underdog music”.

Weatherall was active with more than twenty duos and groups and used a number of aliases. One of the more famous groups was The Two Lone Swordsmen, which he formed with Keith Tenniswood. He produced with him downtempo electronics and house. He explored the techno genre with The Sabers of Paradise.

The Brit, who played at Lowlands in 2007, was still active. At the end of last month he released an EP as a member of The Woodleigh Research Facility. Last year he played on the main stage of the Dekmantel Festival in Amstelveen.
