British court postpones extradition decision of Julian Assange – 2024-03-29 06:41:06

London/Prensa Latina

The High Court of this capital decided today to postpone its decision on the appeal presented by the defense in the case of Australian journalist Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks portal.

According to the Sky News television channel, the United States government intends to prosecute the Australian for espionage, with a sentence of up to 175 years in prison. But Assange, 52, has been fighting extradition since 2019, as he faces charges in the northern nation for publishing hundreds of thousands of leaked documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as diplomatic cables in 2010 and 2011.

In 2022, this country approved the extradition of the Australian journalist, but his lawyers consider this to be a violation of the bilateral justice treaty, which prohibits the use of that resource for political reasons.

If the Superior Court again rejects the request, the judicial option will be exhausted and the extradition order will come into force.

Currently, Assange can only appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

But the legal team fears that if the London judges reject the appeal, the Australian computer scientist will be immediately extradited to the United States.
