British Airways CEO will step down

Alex Cruz, president and chief executive officer of British Airways, he will resign from the leadership of the airline. This was announced by Luis Gallego, the CEO of IAG, the International Airlines Group, the Anglo-Spanish multinational that controls British Airways. Cruz will be replaced, after a transitional period, by Sean Doyle, currently president and CEO of Aer Lingus, the flag carrier of the Republic of Ireland.

Gallego said the IAG is facing “the worst crisis in the sector”. The coronavirus pandemic has in fact hit airlines heavily and more than 40 have failed this year. Cruz began his career at American Airlines and then, in 2009, became CEO of Vueling. Since April 2016 he was CEO and president of British Airways. He will retain the role of president, but with non-executive functions.
