Britain will have to reinvent itself after leaving the EU. Will New Britannia just become Little England or an Empire 2.0? Does Brexit offer opportunities? After leaving the European Union, Great Britain will have to reposition itself. The country could shrink to England (plus Wales) if Scots and Northern Irish prefer to remain in the EU. Britain will have to reposition itself on the intellectual map of the 21st century. England must intellectually confront the questions that this century poses to the former empire. Globalization can be seen as an opportunity and the colonial past as an object that is urgently needed to come to terms with it. But Britain could also remain in the past as an economic great power and political middle power and merely dream of an Empire 2.0. To do so would be to miss the opportunities that this cathartic moment can bring.
