Bremen Steelworks Funding Approval Still Pending, EU Commission Working “Hard” – January 16, 2024

As of: January 16, 2024 5:22 p.m

According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, approval from the EU Commission is still pending. However, the ministry is working “hard” to get the commitment.

The approval of the funding for the Bremen steelworks is still pending. As the Federal Ministry of Economics reported in response to a request from buten un withinn, they are working “hard” to achieve rapid approval from the EU Commission. The money is intended for the climate-friendly conversion of production.

Bremen would pay around 300 million euros

The Bremen SPD MEP Joachim Schuster said earlier that he was confident that the EU Commission’s decision would be available soon. He said it was unfortunate that the approval process was taking so long.

The EU has already approved billions in public aid for the steelworks of Stahlholding Saar, Salzgitter AG and Thyssenkrupp Stahl. In total, the Bremen steelworks is set to receive a billion euros in government funding – this requires the green light from Brussels. Around 300 million euros of the funding amount will come from the Bremen state budget. Arcelor Mittal wants to use the money to convert to green steel.
