Breathe a sigh of relief at hoteliers, tremors at travel agencies

The opening of the border to Germany gives the domestic tourism industry a sigh of relief. How it will go on with flight and package tours is still in the stars.

Breathe easy with some, fear with others. Wednesday showed the turmoil in the travel and tourism industry. While Austrian hoteliers and tourism people were delighted to hear that the border with Germany would be open again on June 15, the world’s largest tourism group, TUI, announced the loss of 8,000 jobs. For many travel agencies, there is still no glimmer of hope in sight. Small travel agencies in particular are threatened with the end, say industry experts. And this wave of bankruptcy could also affect many who have already paid a deposit for their package tour.
