Astronomers at the Australian University of Sydney detected surprising radio signals coming from a small, ultra-cold star.

The scientists said: “This type of protostar has a similar composition to gas giants such as Jupiter, but it can fuse hydrogen atoms, without being able to maintain full-scale nuclear fusion in its core as most stars do.”

The researchers revealed that the star / W0623 / emits faint radio waves, making it the coldest star ever detected to emit this type of electromagnetic radiation, which is usually produced by larger, hotter stars.

They explained that it is a ball of gas that boils at about 425 degrees Celsius without burning nuclear fuel, and it is the coolest star that has been analyzed so far using radio astronomy.

“It is very rare to find ultra-cool brown dwarf stars like this one that produce radio emission, because their dynamics do not usually produce magnetic fields that generate radio emissions detectable from Earth,” said Coffey Rose, lead author of the study. Which produces radio waves at a low temperature is a great discovery.”

It is believed that the rapid rotation of ultra-cooled dwarfs plays a role in generating their strong magnetic fields, and when the magnetic field rotates at a different speed, it can produce electric current flows.

Scientists report that this discovery could help learn more about how young stars evolve, including how they generate magnetic fields.
