Nikki Haley is withdrawing from the American primaries, sources report to American media. This leaves the way open for Donald Trump to be nominated as a presidential candidate on behalf of the Republicans.
Among other things The Wall Street Journal in CNN reports on Wednesday based on sources that Haley is ending her campaign. She will announce this during a speech later today, several sources say.
Haley ran for president last February. For a long time she was in the shadow of her competitors Trump and Ron DeSantis.
But during the various Republican election debates, in which Trump did not participate, Haley emerged as the former president’s main competitor. At least in the national polls.
During the Republican primary in Iowa on January 15, the cards were shuffled even differently. In the conservative state, moderate Haley finished third behind Trump and DeSantis. But her gap to DeSantis was small.
Haley was unable to turn the tide on Super Tuesday
The expectations surrounding Haley in the state of New Hampshire were therefore high. Not because of possible profits, but whether she could stay close to Trump. Haley succeeded somewhat with 43.2 percent of the votes, compared to 54.3 percent for Trump. But then the former president stringed together victories in the various primaries.
Promising results were also not forthcoming in South Carolina, Haley’s home state. On March 3, the former UN ambassador won the Republican primary election in the American capital Washington. It was her first, symbolic victory.
But even on Super Tuesday, when voting took place in fifteen states, Haley was unable to turn the tide. She won in the small state of Vermont, but Trump won in the other states.
