BREAKING Iohannis promulgates the law for the abolition of the Special Section promoted by Cătălin Predoiu / European Commissioner for Justice expressed his concern and announced an evaluation of the law

On Friday, President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law for the abolition of the Special Section promoted by the Minister of Justice Cătălin Predoiu. The Presidential Administration’s announcement of the decree came shortly after European Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova expressed concern and announced an assessment of the law.

„The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, signed on Friday, March 11, 2022, the decree for the promulgation of the Law on the abolition of the Section for the investigation of judicial crimes, as well as for the amendment of Law no. 135/2010 on the Code of Criminal Procedure “, the Presidency announced.

Shortly before, European Commissioner for Justice Vera Jourova announced in a Twitter post that she had conveyed to the Minister of Justice, Cătălin Predoiu, the concerns regarding the Special Sectionstating that discussions with the Venice Commission will be closely followed and an assessment of the law on the abolition of the SIIJ will be made.

The Venice Commission recommends to the Government that the prosecutor’s offices specialized in investigating corruption offenses such as DNA and DIICOT acquire powers to investigate crimes committed by prosecutors or judges, according to a point of view officially sent to the Government on March 7 and consulted by G4Media.ro.
