Brazilian Code of Sports Justice: Punishments and Controversies Surrounding Coaches’ Statements on Refereeing

The Brazilian Code of Sports Justice provides for punishment, in its article 243-F, for “Offending someone in their honor, due to a fact directly related to sport.” It was in this article that João Martins, Abel Ferreira’s assistant, was included in the STJD when he spoke about the system that he did not want to let the Alviverde team be champions.

The expected punishment is one to six games of suspension, but, in the case of a coach, it can have a minimum penalty of four games. Martins was punished with three games.

Abrafut, an association that brings together the elite of referees, released a note of repudiation: “In yesterday’s game (21/09/2023) between Grêmio x Palmeiras, another regrettable episode that we will not let go unpunished. Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira clearly and explicitly denounces arbitration.” The association can present a notice of infraction to the STJD as it has done in other cases.

In addition to the Palmeirenses, last week, Botafogo coach, Bruno Lage, insinuated that the refereeing had made a mistake against the team, in the game against Atlético-MG, to leave the “championship lively”. This also generated a note of rejection from Abrafut.
