Brazil’s men’s basketball is out of the Tokyo Olympic Games. This Sunday, the green-yellow team decided the Pre-Olympic of Split, Croatia, against Germany and ended up defeated by 75-64. With the vice-championship, the team from Canary Islands is once again out of the Olympics after participating in the Olympics London 2012 and at Rio 2016.

German Mortiz Wagner was the scorer and highlight of the match with 28 points, while Voigtmann led the rebounds with 11 executions of the foundation. On the Brazilian side, Anderson Varejão scored 14 times, four more than Alex Garcia.

Teams make a lot of mistakes at the beginning

Germany started better, opening 6-0 with two threes. Brazil responded with baskets from Caboclo and Alex. In the fourth minute, Benite hit a 3-ball, making it 7-6. A minute later, Hettsheimeir hit a 3-ball, making it 10-6. Inspired, Hettsheimeir hit another 3-ball in a row, scoring 13- 8.

The game continued tense for the next few minutes with both teams making a lot of mistakes. At eight, Germany turned to 14-13 after a basket by Mortiz Wagner. Brazil woke up after taking the turn, making 17 to 14 in two well-defined attacks by Leo Meindl. In the final minutes of the fourth, however, the two teams again made a lot of mistakes, and the scoreboard was no longer busy.

The Germans came back better for the second quarter, turning to 19-17 in less than two minutes. Brazil soon tied for a basket by Marcelinho Huertas, but Germany jumped ahead again, making it 23 to 19. At four minutes, Varejão won the dispute in the bottle and decreased to 23 to 21. But Germany fired after a basket of three by Benzing, opening 11 points – 34 to 23 – two minutes before the break.

Seeing the rival dominate the game, coach Aleksandar Petrovic asked for time, and Brazil was back on the court. With 34 seconds left in the first half, Alex dropped to 34-28 on a three-ball. There was still time for Yago to shoot to three in the last move of the fourth and set the partial score at 36-34 in favor of the Germans.

Then came the third quarter, and Brazil took just over two minutes to tie at 38-38. At three, Yago was fouled and converted the second of the two free throws, putting the Brazilians ahead: 39-38. Nervous, the two teams missed a lot in the following minutes, and the marker was only moved again at seven, when Wagner made 45 to 39.

Germany asserts itself in the end

Playing their all or nothing in the match, Brazil opened the scoreboard in the last quarter with a basket from Varejão. Only Benzig responded with a three-ball for Germany. Managing the result well, the Germans entered the third minute, winning 58-50. At six, Benite missed a shot to three, reaching the incredible mark of just two hits in 16 attempts on the court.

At seven, Wagner pulled the counterattack and scored 67-56. In the next move, Benite finally hit a three-ball, and the difference dropped to eight – 67-59. With two minutes to go, Obst scored a three and left the Germany very close to victory: 70-59. From then on, it was only up to the Germans to manage the result until they confirmed the victory by 75-64.
