Brazil announces fourth dose of vaccine after rebound in cases

In an official statement, the Ministry of Health explained that this decision was made due to “the increasing trend in the number of cases of Covid-19especially among the most vulnerable and exposed groups”.

After a strong incidence of the disease in the first two months of this year, there had been a sharp drop in the number of deaths and cases, which, however, has been reversed in recent weeks.

Since the middle of last month, the average number of deaths has been around 100 per day and cases have stabilized at around 40,000 every 24 hours, when between March and April they had fallen to around 50 deaths and less than 10,000 infections, respectively.

This situation, although it has not yet put pressure on the hospital network, has set off alarms again in one of the countries hardest hit by the health crisis in the world, along with the United States and India.

Since February 2020, when the pandemic broke out in the country, Brazilwith a population of 210 million inhabitants, accumulates just over 31 million cases and almost 667,000 deaths.

Until now, the fourth dose of the vaccines, or second booster, was applied only to people with comorbidities or over 60 years of age, a limit that, due to the new situation, now drops to 50 years of age.

According to official data, to date 77% of Brazilians have taken two doses of the vaccine, while almost 40% have received the first booster.
