Sao Paulo, Jul 15 (EFE) .- Brazil, one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic in the world, added 1,548 new deaths in the last 24 hours and reached a cumulative 538,942 deaths from the pathogen, as reported by this Thursday the Ministry of Health.

In its daily newsletter, the ministry noted that, in the same period, 52,789 new infections were also registered, which raised the total number of infected in the country to 19,262,518.

The figures, which remain high despite the fact that the pandemic has been showing a clear downward trend for three weeks, confirm the Latin American giant as the second nation in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, behind the United States, and the third with the most cases, after the US and India.

The death rate from the disease this Thursday was 256 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while the incidence was 9,166 infected in the same proportion.

Likewise, the daily average of deaths in the last seven days was 1,252, the lowest level since March 1, while the daily average of cases in the last week was 42,822, an indicator that is also in decreasing trend.

Both the authorities and health specialists point to the advance of mass vaccination as the main reason behind the improvement of the indicators.

According to data from the Ministry, Brazil, of about 210 million inhabitants, has already applied the first dose of an immunizer to about 40% of its adult population, while 19.5% have already received full vaccination coverage.

However, experts call for caution amid the relaxation of circulation measures and the resumption of activities and warn that the risk of new outbreaks of the disease and even reinfections can still occur.

In that sense, the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, announced that he was again diagnosed, for the second time, with covid, despite having already received two doses of the vaccine.

“My case serves as an alert so that all who have already been vaccinated continue to respect the protocols. Well, everyone is susceptible to being infected and transmitting the virus, although vaccinated,” the regional president said on his social networks this Thursday.

The governor of the most populous, wealthy and industrialized state in Brazil also appealed to all São Paulo residents who have not yet been immunized.

“And for those who have not yet been vaccinated, my case also serves as an example, to demonstrate the importance of vaccination to prevent the disease from worsening, leading to hospitalization or death,” he stressed.

With some 46 million inhabitants, Sao Paulo is, in absolute terms, the state most affected by the pandemic in the country, with a cumulative number of nearly 134,000 deaths and some four million confirmed cases of the disease.

On the other hand, it is also one of the most advanced regions in terms of vaccination, with almost half of its population already inoculated with the first dose of the antidote. EFE
