Brayan Ibañez breaks records and makes history

He has captured a gold in the snatch, a gold overall, as well as a silver in the clean and jerk at these Pan Am Championships. He lifted 107 kg in the snatch and 125 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 232 kg.

He broke three personal bests and two Pan-American records. “I only knew two days after the competition for the records, I was very happy because my father himself set about fifteen Pan American records, so I was proud to be able to follow in his footsteps,” commented the 14-year-old in an interview with L’Action.

Although satisfied with his results, Brayan knows the job is far from over and he is already preparing for the world championships which will take place in May 2022. “I have achieved my goal of becoming a Pan American champion, but I want to continue to improve my results in the snatch and clean and jerk. ”

He added that these championships have allowed him to compare himself and face 15-year-old athletes, but that if he is to achieve his ultimate dream of participating in the Olympics, he will have to be prepared to face older opponents. “I have three years left to work as hard as I can to get there!”

Being able to participate in this last face-to-face event was also a big deal for Brayan, since all of his competitions had been held virtually since the start of the pandemic. This period was difficult for all the athletes, but thanks to his constant work and his determination, the Chertsois knew how to keep his goals in mind, and stood out in each of his presences.

The weightlifter also said he was very proud to have been able to represent his country, his province, his region and his municipality and hopes that his performances will inspire more young people from Lanaudière to discover his sport.

Finally, Brayan wishes to offer his medals to the mayor of Chertsey and possibly other elected officials in the region to draw their attention to the fact that weightlifting is a sport that receives little financial support.

The next international Brayan competition will be held next December on the German side.
