Brandenburg should become more attractive. The country not only needs satisfied residents but also skilled workers. Affordable living space is required for this. The building minister is pushing the pace.

Potsdam. In the past year, Brandenburg significantly increased funding for housing. The investment volume from state funds rose from 25 million euros to 170 million euros, as Transport Minister Gudio Beermann announced on Wednesday. The federal government subsidized housing with 5 million euros. The state government not only compensated for the lost federal funds last year, but also increased them, the minister emphasized.

In 2019, the federal government’s share of the funding was 75 million euros. The state had to make up for the missing funds because there was a change in the funding system due to the expiry of the unbundling law. In total, federal financial aid of around 30 million euros was available in 2020. According to the ministry, the remaining 25 million euros will be used this year to promote social housing.

According to Beermann, a total of 69 funding projects with 1303 residential units were supported across the country. 66.5 percent of the apartments subsidized in 2020 were approved in the Berlin area alone. The minister named a building project in Oranienburg (Oberhavel) as an example. According to this, 26 residential buildings with around 360 apartments will be built there. The completion of the first construction phase is expected this month. The state subsidized the project with 3.4 million euros and participated with a building loan of 20.8 million euros, said Beermann. 112 barrier-free apartments are to be built there, 114 are to be available to lower-income families with socially acceptable rents.

In the opinion of the Minister, the success of the housing offensive in Brandenburg can be seen in the development of the rental price and occupancy agreements over the past three years. In 2018 there were 335 subsidized residential units with new rental price agreements; in 2020 the number rose to 871.

In Brandenburg, unlike in Berlin, there is basically sufficient and affordable housing available, Beermann said. The average rent is 5.76 euros per square meter. But there are different markets. The range between growth and contraction remains characteristic of the housing markets in the country. Different solutions are needed for different needs, he added. There are demand bottlenecks in some regions and oversupply in others.

In order to keep the funding balanced, the guidelines are to be revised this year, announced the building minister. One works closely with partners such as the “Bündnis für Wohnen”, which accompanies a weighing of interests. The alliance was launched in March 2017. It goes back to an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Construction, which suggested the establishment of such associations. Actors such as the construction industry, housing companies and the association of cities and municipalities are involved.
