Rotterdam South has a brand new theater. Right next to the Zuidplein metro station is the culture palace of the same name, which was officially delivered on Friday. “It gives a bit of a double feeling, in this era of corona,” acknowledges Marketing and Programming Head Rebecca Sigmond.

The new theater will not open until September. The performances that the audience can see there are written in pencil, says Sigmond. A lot can change.
The corona crisis, which means that all theaters are locked and only a limited number of spectators are allowed to enter soon, has a significant impact in this respect. The virus already had that in the old theater. The doors closed there on March 12 abruptly and without a farewell party.
Standing concerts
There will probably be no full houses in September either. “But”, says Sigmond hopefully, “the new building is a lot more spacious and we can easily work with the one and a half meter rule. We have three rooms, which can be flexibly arranged, one of which is explicitly intended for activities of people from the The foyer, in which a restaurant will be built, is also a lot bigger than before. “
The main hall has room for six hundred people. What is special is that it can also be converted into a hall for standing concerts. Then, when the corona crisis is over, there is room for a thousand people.
In addition to the theater lover, the book freak can also indulge in the new building. Because the library will also move into it in the coming months.
Demolished
And the old Zuidplein theater? That will be demolished this summer. But not without there having been some goodbye.
There is an online Goodbye party on Thursday 21 May. “It’s the last chance to see the theater from the inside again,” said Rebecca Sigmond. “Everyone can watch the Facebook account and YouTube channel of Theater Zuidplein for free.”
