Bottas responds to criticism of Hamilton and Wolff: ‘Would have wanted to do things differently’

Valtteri Bottas admits he could have done better in the opening stages of the Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes-driver emphasizes, however, that he did his best and that in retrospect it is easy to say that it could have been better.

The Mexican Grand Prix started very difficult for pole sitter Bottas. The Finn had a difficult start and was then also hit by Daniel Ricciardo, which caused him to fall back very far. In the end, he left Mexico City without any points. Bottas admits that he repeatedly replayed the start of the race in his head. “To see if I could have done better,” explains the 32-year-old. “At the moment you make quick decisions. Of course it is also a matter of unhappiness. When Daniel [Ricciardo] hit me, ruined my race. I have often asked myself that question. I don’t know how often exactly, but a few times.”

Criticism Wolff and Hamilton

After the Grand Prix, both Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton is extremely critical of Bottas. The two gentlemen argued that Bottas simply left the door open for Max Verstappen, who then easily took the win. Although Verstappen has already indicated that it is too easy to blame it on Bottas, the Finn himself admits that there is a grain of truth in it. “If I’m really honest with myself and looking back, I would have liked to do things differently,” he adds. “It’s very easy to say that afterwards, but at the time I thought I was making the right decisions.”

“If I could relive the moment, maybe I could find a way to block Max,” said Bottas. “Or maybe keep him from coming out on the outside. I don’t know, I could do something like that. But at the time I was doing my best and that’s all I can do. I’ve looked at the footage of course and if I ever get to If I find myself in a situation like that, maybe I can do better, maybe I can’t.”
