Boston Dynamics unveils the SDK for its Spot robot

Spot hit the real world market in September 2019. On January 23, Boston Dynamics released unveiled the SDK of its robot dog, to allow its users to program as they see fit.

An SDK accessible to all

Thanks to this kit, developers will thus be able to have access to the various functions of the metal quadruped and program it with the various functions it offers. The SDK is available to everyone, in open source, sure GitHub. The manufacturer of Spot specifies that: “This SDK will allow developers to create custom controls, integrate sensor information into data analysis tools and design controls that extend the capabilities of the original platform”.

There is no longer any doubt: Spot should appeal to companies that need to be more efficient. In April 2019, after months and months of testing, after Spot had to prove his ability to open doors, or even his phenomenal traction capabilities, Boston Dynamics’ little robot dog had reached its final version, that intended for production. If initially, this robot was simply designed to inspect the offices of companies, its features have been significantly revised upwards. It is also the first robotic device from Boston Dynamics to have reached a stage compatible with mass production.

Real-world applications

Boston Dynamics believes that Spot is ready to be personalized. So far, only the developers of the program Early Adopter could get the SDK and customize Spot as they liked. From today, it is accessible to everyone and available for free. Boston Dynamics specifies that developers wishing to cut their teeth on Spot will still have to become early adopters if they want to hire a robot to test it out. In itself, that doesn’t change much, just request it from Boston Dynamics.

The company takes the example of HoloBuilder, a company that used the SDK to add Spot to their existing application. Boston Dynamics specifies that: “With what they have developed, HoloBuilder employees can use their smartphones to teach Spot how to locate a path around a construction site and then Spot will autonomously navigate that path and take images that will go directly into their processing software ”.

Our chances of meeting this robot in the streets become greater as the days go by. Although small, the Spot robot is quite impressive. He goes where you tell him to go, he is able to avoid obstacles, to walk with perfect balance despite extreme circumstances. In short, Spot will certainly achieve prowess with companies that will have the chance to work with him.
