Boston Celtics Sign Jaylen Brown to Record-Breaking Contract Extension

Released in the Eastern Conference final by Miami last season, Boston did not want to part with Jaylen Brown, future free agent in 2024. According to ESPN and The Athletic, the former Team USA player, seventh in the 2019 World Cup, has extended in Massachusetts for five years and 304 million dollars (275 million euros).

Bound to Boston until 2029

An amount that eclipses the lease of Nikola Jokic, signed last summer (five years and 276 million dollars, or 249 million euros) before the superb season of the Serbian pivot, NBA champion and MVP of the final with Denver. Brown is now tied until 2029 with Boston. His five years of contract signed on Tuesday are guaranteed and without option on the fifth year, neither for the player nor for the franchise. The other Celtics star, Jayson Tatum, is under contract until 2025 with an option to extend an additional season.

Brown, chosen by Boston with the third draft pick in 2016, is coming off the best season of his career statistically with 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the regular season. Called for the second time in his career in the All-Star Game, the winger however saw his averages drop in the play-offs (22.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists). Like his team, he came through in the decisive game 7 in the Eastern Conference final against Miami (83-104), at home, with 19 points (8 of 23 shooting, 1 of 9 at three points) and 8 ball losses.

Before extending Brown, the Celtics set up an exchange this summer to attract Latvian interior Kristaps Porzingis (ex-Washington) by separating from Marcus Smart, the oldest player in the franchise where he had been playing since 2014.
