Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Newcastle, and AC Milan: Last 16 Qualification Chances and UEFA Rules

Jakarta

Borussia Dortmund has advanced to the last 16 Liga Champions via group F which is also called the hell group. That means just one of Newcastle United, Paris Saint Germain, and AC Milan will qualify. What are the chances of these three teams?

Dortmund was unexpectedly the most consistent team during the group phase. Most recently, Marco Reus et al convincingly silenced Milan 3-1 at the San Siro on the fifth matchday, Wednesday (29/11) WIB. This result means they have collected 10 points from five matches.

Meanwhile, in another match, PSG held Newcastle to a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes. These results make Les Parisiens move up to second place with seven points, two points ahead of The Magpies and Milan who are in third and fourth positions.

Looking at the current standings, Dortmund is certain to qualify as at least runner-up. To become group winners, they only need not to lose against PSG on the last matchday of the group stage.

Meanwhile, for the other three teams, there are conditions that they must fulfill to ensure they advance to the knockout phase. Following are the details, referring to UEFA rules.

Dortmund will win Group F if:

– did not lose against PSG
– if they lose against PSG, Dortmund will automatically become group runners-up

PSG qualify for the last 16 if:

– beat Dortmund (become group champion)
– drew with Dortmund and Newcastle failed to beat Milan
– lost to Dortmund, but Newcastle vs Milan ended in a draw

Newcastle qualify for the last 16 if:

– beat Milan and PSG draw or lose to Dortmund (Newcastle wins head-to-head with PSG)

Milan qualify for the last 16 if:

– beat Newcastle and Dortmund beat PSG
