Border Traffic Decreases and Impacts Bulgaria’s Schengen Acceptance – Interview with Chief Commissioner Yavor Serafimov

The traffic of people across the borders of our country has decreased twice since the middle of the year. This was said in a special interview for bTV by the Director of the Main Directorate “Combating Organized Crime”, Chief Commissioner Yavor Serafimov.

This is the reason for the latest positive report of the European Commission on our acceptance into Schengen. “There is no border in the world that cannot be crossed. The Bulgaria-Turkey land border is the second busiest in the world and the first in Europe. The trend is for us to be the busiest border in the world by 2025,” Serafimov commented.

At the beginning of the year, the anti-mafia reported a 50 percent increase in migrants compared to last year. The chief commissioner says that there were 24-hour detentions with 1,500 detainees. But, the curve breaks in September. “Turkey is making extremely great efforts to repel and prevent migrants from entering Bulgaria. We have very good communication with colleagues from Turkey through a tripartite center through which information is exchanged every day. We have given enough arguments to the politicians to be able to defend Bulgaria’s position for our acceptance into Schengen”, Yavor Serafimov points out.

The statistics of GDBOP show that the outflow is currently expected, because it is no longer easy to overcome the interior of our country. “There are checkpoints built at several junctions. In the interior of the country, a number of operative-search activities with different methods are carried out – from our border to our western border with Serbia or with Romania,” Serafimov commented.

Human trafficking channels are currently diverted through Greece and North Macedonia.
