Border Patrol Apprehends Hundreds of Migrants, Activists Call for Dignity and Respect

SAN DIEGO — Border Patrol has apprehended hundreds of migrants in recent days, and another group attempted to cross into the United States on Sunday.

CBS 8 crews saw what appeared to be a group of immigrants lined up along the border wall in San Ysidro, Waiting for a response from Border Patrol for more details.

Sunday marked the third day of large numbers of migrants attempting to cross the border into the United States. Nearly 90 people were in custody, Border Patrol officials said Friday, with more than 100 apprehended Saturday morning, about 400 apprehended Saturday night and another 200 immigrants apprehended Sunday.

Immigrant rights activist Enrique Morones said: “These people are human beings and should be treated with dignity and respect. Like many here, not all, but most are from immigrant families.”

Article 42 allows the United States to quickly deport immigrants seeking asylum. A Trump-era public health law expires next week, which Border Patrol agents blame for the influx.

Immigration activists say immigrant shelters aren’t up to the task.

“Smugglers often tell their shelters there are openings, they just show up in line and say you are applying for asylum. That is not how it works. The shelters don’t know what to do,” he said.

Once Title 42 ceases to exist, border officials will abide by the laws established in Title 8. This means that the United States will continue to deport immigrants who enter the country illegally. Those arrested could be barred from reapplying for asylum for five years.

The Department of Homeland Security says it is preparing for up to 13,000 immigrants to cross the border each day once Title 42 expires.

Meanwhile, Border Patrol said the San Diego department is using all of its available resources to screen and process immigrants as quickly as possible.

Title 42 expires on May 11.
