Boosting Immunization Amid the Challenges of the Covid Pandemic

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the immunization rate at public health centers (puskesmas) decreased by 56.9%.

This is very unfortunate considering that complete basic immunization plays a role in protecting children from the risk of being exposed to Covid-19 and PD3I outbreaks (Extraordinary Events of Diseases that Can Be Prevented by Immunization).

In response to this condition, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as a global health care company with leading scientific technology continues to educate about the importance of immunization.

“In this time of a pandemic, it is important to continue to educate about the importance of immunization as well as convincing parents to provide immunizations to their children while still paying attention to the principles of Infection Prevention and Control (PPI),” said GSK Vaccine Medical Director, dr. Deliana Permatasari.

Regarding PPI, Ministry of Health and IDAI has issued Technical Instructions for Immunization Services during the Covid-19 pandemic so that health facilities and health workers continue to serve children’s immunizations in the midst of a pandemic.

The four most important guidelines are firstly the principle of physical distancing, secondly the implementation of a triage system (separating children who are immunized from children who are treated because of illness), the third is setting arrival hours to prevent crowds of patients, and fourth is socialization for parents and children to practice clean living behaviors. and stay healthy by washing hands with soap and wearing masks outside the home.

With the four guides to support immunization safe, parents can re-immunize that may be missed or needed by our children.

“Giving complete immunizations to infants and children not only protects the child from certain diseases but also helps to achieve community immunity (herd immunity). The more the number of children who are immunized, the higher the immunization coverage so that children who do not receive immunizations will still be protected,” said dr. Deliana.
