Books, games & music: discover the brand new Munich city libraries

When you think of libraries, do you have the old cliché of dusty books and strict silence in your head? Then it’s time for an update, which will be available from November 19th. is available. In the Sendlinger Gasteig HP8 and in the Motorama in Haidhausen it is invented Munich City Library new and offers you much more than pure reading pleasure. Library 2.0, so to speak, because at the two new locations you can do so much more than leafing through books and studying or working in a concentrated manner. Gambling on consoles, recording your own music, experiencing virtual reality, participating in workshops – the library becomes an experience and digital media finally becomes a matter of course.

In order to get a picture for yourself, we recommend that you stop by at the two opening weekends. From November 19th to 21st can you in Sendlinger Gasteig HP8 For example, take part in guided tours, read aloud yourself during the reading marathon, attend a calligraphy workshop or dance to the sound of a DJ and create your own visuals. Welcome to the Open Library

You can of course still find books, magazines, newspapers and journals as well as quiet workplaces in the two new libraries. They are, so to speak, the new editions of the former city library in Gasteig, which will be closed and completely renovated after 37 years. When we were studying, we had one or two learning sessions here and now we are happy about the update, which definitely motivates us to stop by the Munich city libraries more often.

The long opening times are particularly appealing: You can stop by the Motorama Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The library in Sendlinger Gasteig HP8 is even open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., making it a flexible meeting point where you can learn, read, work, exchange ideas and browse. And because we talked about the fact that digital is a matter of course, you can of course borrow your media – as at all other locations of the Munich staff library – via self-checkout stations.

GameLab, MusikLab, virtual reality, reading café and much more!

The new city libraries differ not only in terms of their locations, but also in terms of their content. While in Gasteig HP8 the focus is on music, language and lifelong learning, it turns in Motorama more about family, gaming and digital learning. This primarily addresses children, teenagers and young adults in Haidhausen, who not only rummage through books here, but can also let off steam in the GameLab. Consoles, laptops and an eSports arena are available for gaming. In addition, a media workbench offers access to techniques such as virtual reality, coding and robotics.

The musical counterpart to the GameLab can be found in Sendling, where musicians * can record their own sound in the MusikLab and practice on ePianos. The library also offers a wide range of music CDs, sheet music, books, films, language courses, newspapers and magazines to borrow and use on site. The in-house reading café is particularly good for browsing, where you can of course order a coffee and drink it completely analogue. If that weren’t enough arguments to get rid of the dusty library cliché, there is nothing more we can do. Except to remind you again not to miss the opening weekends of the new Munich city libraries:
