Books Behind Bars: A Journey of Redemption and Reflection

The presentation of “Books behind bars” took place this Tuesday evening in the Auditorium Hall of the Evita Museum, 2988 Lafinur Street, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo. Around a hundred people participated in the activity, including journalists, former detainees, family and friends of the author of the work, which was published on October 1 by Ediciones Almar.

It is a work that compiles the tour of the prisons that Ana has been doing uninterruptedly for six years; inaugurating libraries in prisons of the provincial and federal system. After the formal event, between photographs and dedications written on the copies, a brief celebration was held in the restaurant of the building that bears the name of the standard bearer of the humble.

About the presentation

“I thank everyone for coming, even in the rain, I say it from the heart,” he said. Ana Siciliajournalist and president of the AS Foundation, during the presentation, of which Time He participated. He continued by saying that “at this moment there are colleagues that I met in different prisons, along with their families,” she added.

“There is also my husband and my son, my lifelong friends, for me it is a great honor,” said the author. Furthermore, she said that from a very young age “they taught me to be grateful, that’s why I do it at all times.”

“I spent six years going to prisons, this morning I got up and went to El Ágora of penal unit 9 of La Plata, which is where all this started on Tuesday, October 3, 2017,” Ana recalled. She continued describing that “It is a small place, like a classroom, where detainees from the different sectors and pavilions of the place attend.”

Julián Maradeo is one of the precursors of “I having arrived in prisons, I always say that he was the one who opened the first lock for me when he invited me to his workshop, who is not present today because he is traveling,” the journalist stressed.

Books in the pavilions

During all this time “I delivered 8,500 books, practically in half of the prisons throughout the country,” listed the president of the AS Foundation. She is very happy to have returned to El Ágora after so long “with my book in hands, before presenting it here I did it with my detained colleagues, many of them have been seeing me every Tuesday for six years,” she said.

“Once I asked Hernán Lijo – from Ediciones Almar – if he could donate books to a home for boys and girls in the Almirante Brown district, where I was born and raised,” Ana recalled. She also said that it was incredible “because Within 48 hours I had all the new children’s books to bring to them.”

“I always tell the boys and girls in prisons that they at least receive visits from their families and that these children from the homes have no one,” the journalist emphasized. Now, after six years, “I am traveling through another territory with Paula, my lifelong friend and today my right hand at the AS Foundation; Every time a person buys a book they are helping us in this fight for equal rights in all contexts where they are violated,” she concluded.

“We want to tell why you have to buy Ana’s book, read it and why it has to be in every home,” said Hernán Lijo, from Ediciones Almar. First of all, he highlighted that “it is not easy to write 102 pages in a book that transmit emotions, it is not easy,” he added.

“Something very important that we as a Publisher discovered in the book, first of all it is not a common work, because there are very few people who dedicate their lives to bringing books to prisons, with what that implies,” Hernán valued. He went on to explain that “it is very simple to say it, but doing it means bringing freedom, knowledge and inviting people to think and reflect.”

“The book starts with a very important prologue by Evita Perón, in which she says that everyone has ‘to give their best’, but there is a part that says ‘and even more’, that is precisely what we saw in the book by Anita: her action is even more,” the man remarked. During his reading he experienced “the meaning of feeling emotions, it is something very difficult to fit into a single genre, it is a book with a lot of morals, because what one does, says, thinks and feels is reflected in this work.” he delved.

The author of the book was accompanied by Florencia Codagnone and Carla Lorenzo during the event. On the back cover of the work there is a contribution from the writer Claudia Piñeiro. Next Tuesday the 10th at 7 p.m. at the Berazategui Book Fair, along with great authors who are going to present, Ana Sicilia will also do so.
