IMOLA – «I don’t want to belong to the left that is content to testify. I want to govern ». Beppe Sala lands in Emilia-Romagna to support the outgoing governor Stefano Bonaccini and from the Imola racetrack it starts in fourth to help restore momentum to the center-left which risks losing a symbolic Region. “I don’t want to remain the last left in the North – explains the mayor of Milan recalling the 9 regions (out of 9) lost in the last year since his deployment – I don’t want to be a panda”. And then, in agreement with Bonaccini, he indicates why the challenge to the Salvini League, and to the center-right more generally, is not lost at the start. “Milan and Emilia-Romagna are models, they are the demonstration that you can govern with a center-left wide open to civic experiences”. It is the point that is dear to the outgoing governor who for his electoral campaign has set aside his role as a man of the Democratic Party for a more civic profile, adopting slogans and unpolitical colors. “We govern the most modern and dynamic realities in the country – observes Bonaccini in the interview with Sala conducted by Gerardo Greco – we attract investments and tourists from all over the world. We know how to speak to businesses but without forgetting the workers and the weakest ».
It is the opening of the election campaign that will close on January 26, a crucial step for Italian politics. The two protagonists of the day are aware of this, but do not appear worried. They are pleased that the phenomenon of Sardines was born in Emilia and that this changed the narrative of the election campaign. “We must respect and listen to those who take to the streets demanding a policy in the name of civil tones and without fences,” says Sala. And Bonaccini, even without explicitly saying so, is ready to involve someone from the experience of the square in the government of the Region, should he be re-elected.
The game is complicated, the center-right wind blows strong even in a center-left stronghold. Sala does not send them to say to Matteo Salvini: “Stop it with slogans and passwords. He has an autarchic vision and proposes a return to an inauspicious past. He and his allies want to bring us to ruin. You say I got my head up? Someone like me who has worked for 30-40 years does not mount the head, if anything, if someone like him has always been on the taxpayer’s shoulders ». And Borgonzoni also stings: «In Emilia-Romagna Bonaccini has to be voted because he is better. Borgonzoni, to put it in Milan, does not even know which way it is turned: let’s leave it to Rome with its silly t-shirts, it is shameful that the right can be represented by a person who went to the room with that shirt “(the reference it is on the shirt shown in the last few months by the Northern League candidate Lucia Borgonzoni, with the words “Talk to us about Bibbiano”).
Bonaccini, for his part, knows he has his eyes on him as the last bastion to defend. «The challenge does not scare us. We have a winning model to propose. If we raise fences, if we lock ourselves in our region we have lost before starting. If we win here, however, I am convinced that the recovery will start for the national center-left all over Italy ».
